Presidents Day

All ACPS schools and offices are closed in observance of Presidents’ Day.

Parent-Teacher Conferences 

Fri, Feb. 28

Parent-teacher conferences are an important opportunity for families and teachers to discuss students’ social, emotional and academic learning progress. Schools will communicate with their students, staff and families regarding the schedule for conferences. There will be no school for students (except for Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School students).

Weekly sessions at different library locations.

Improve your English speaking skills! The Alexandria City Library invites all those interested to join a conversation group to practice English and gain confidence. No registration is needed.

2025 Equity Climate Survey

Martin Luther King Jr. Poster Exhibition

Kate Waller Barrett Branch Library  (717 Queen St. - second floor) 

Join the Kate Waller Barrett Branch Library by honoring the legacy of African American writers. Participants can sign up to read an excerpt from a work by a favorite author, poet or essayist. Reading times are limited to 3-5 minutes.

 

The National African American Read-In

The Alexandria Black History Museum, in partnership with the Office of Historic Alexandria, sponsors an annual student poster exhibition for Alexandria City Public Schools students in grades 2-5. The posters will be on display in the Vola Lawson Lobby of City Hall.

The African American Cowboy

"The African American Cowboy and the Forgotten Creators of Country Music." From renowned cowboy Bill Pickett to singer Beyoncé Knowles, African Americans have played a significant role in shaping country and western music and culture. This program is hosted by the National Association for the Advancement  of Colored People (NAACP) in partnership with the Alexandria Black History Museum. The event is free, but space is limited, so please reserve your tickets

Black History Live with Culture Queen

Join Grammy nominated performer Culture Queen for an interactive musical storytelling show that celebrates the kings and queens of African American history.

All-City Fifth Grade Choral Festival Performance

Select fifth grade students from each elementary school will take the stage to make music together as part of our All-City Fifth Grade Choral Festival. Please join ACPS for this first-of-its-kind performance in our division.

Valentine Card Extravaganza!

Spend your Sunday afternoon making Valentine’s Day cards for someone special in your life.  This event is intended for all ages. Cardmaking supplies will be provided, so get your creative juices flowing. Do not have the time to make a card? No worries! Just pick up a pre-made kit at the information desk and create a card at home.

The Alexandria Black History Museum, in partnership with the Office of Historic Alexandria, sponsors an annual Student Poster Exhibition Awards Ceremony for Alexandria City Public School students in grades 2-5. This is a 30+ year event that has over 200 ACPS students and its families attend.

The George Washington Birthday Parade

Join the thousands of spectators who will be lining the streets of Old Town Alexandria to cheer on the oldest and largest George Washington birthday parade in the country! This year’s parade theme is George Washington: America’s Commander-in-Chief, marking the 250th anniversary of the start of the Revolutionary War and the founding of the United States Army. This year’s Grand Marshal is United States Army Deputy Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Heidi J. Hoyle.

The Washington Revels Jubilee Voices Concert

The Washington Revels Jubilee Voices ensemble is dedicated to preserving African American history and traditions through a cappella music, drama and dance. Established in 2010, the group performs regularly throughout the Washington, D.C., area, sharing songs and stories of struggle, perseverance, trials and triumphs.

Meaningful Conversations is about racism and what to do about it. Join Alexandria community members for the resumption of the “Meaningful Conversations about Racism – and What To Do About It” conversations. Explore and celebrate the diversity of cultures and peoples in our area, address the attitudes and behaviors that still divide us and seek remedies grounded in the recognition that we are one interconnected, interdependent human family.

ALIVE! is a local not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing emergency and basic needs support to children, families and individuals living in poverty and with hunger in the City of Alexandria. ALIVE! will distribute bags of food to Alexandria City residents. No ID is required. Make sure to check out the ALIVE website for more information about the food hubs.

Cultural Observance Days

On weekdays, these are regular school days. However, these days should not hold any assessments, sporting events and other school-sponsored special activities. Any missed assignments due to student absences on these days can be made up without penalty.
