Community Engagement Events

Alexandria Library 

The Alexandria Library hosts exciting events and activities for all ages! From storytime for kids to book clubs, workshops and community gatherings, there is always something happening at your local branch. Additionally, individuals looking to improve their English speaking skills can join our weekly Beginner and Intermediate English Conversation groups, held at various library locations, with no registration required. Check out the events calendar to find something that interests you.

Alexandria Parks and Recreation

Alexandria City Parks and Recreation offers a variety of programs and events for all ages, including sports, fitness classes, family-friendly festivals and much more. Redistricting Advisory Committee Meeting

ACPS has formed a Redistricting Advisory Committee (RAC) to engage the community in the process of updating school boundaries. The RAC will gather feedback and share updates, ensuring community voices are heard as ACPS works to create a fair and equitable redistricting plan that addresses enrollment balance and resource allocation.

ALIVE! is a local not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing emergency and basic needs support to children, families and individuals living in poverty and with hunger in the City of Alexandria. ALIVE! will distribute bags of food to Alexandria City residents. No ID is required. Make sure to check out the ALIVE website for more information about the Food Hubs.

Alexandria Youth Speak Up

Patrick Henry Recreation Center (4653 Taney Ave.)

Alexandria Youth Speak Up brings together middle school youth, high school youth and adults to hear directly from youth about issues they are facing. Discussions about a range of topics that impact youth include solutions to address the issues discussed. Dinner will be provided.

Public Health Week Celebration

Stream Cleanup

Four Mile Run Park (3700 Commonwealth Ave.)

In celebration of Earth Day and in participation with the Alice Ferguson Foundation’s Potomac River Cleanup, the City’s Stormwater Management Division will be hosting a stream cleanup at Four Mile Run Park. Participants will meet at the Commonwealth Avenue cul-de-sac near the Four Mile Run ballfields.

Meaningful Conversations: Building Your Own Network

Join us for the second ACPS School Boundary Redistricting Community Meeting. This is your opportunity to review updated boundary map proposals, share input and ask questions in order to help shape the final recommendations.

Native Roots Earth Day Program

Tue., April 22, 2025, 8:25 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

John Adams Elementary School and Early Childhood Center (5651 Rayburn Ave.) 

Alexandria City Public Schools will celebrate Earth Day with the Alexandria Beautification Commission and ALX Dog Walk with a day filled with environmental learning and hands-on activities at John Adams Elementary and the Early Childhood Center. Students, staff and volunteers will plant native species vegetation, create Earth Day themed art and participate in sustainability focused workshops. 

Days of Remembrance for Victims of the Holocaust

The City of Alexandria will observe the 36th Annual Ceremony of Commemoration Days of Remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust, at noon on Thur., April 24, 2025, in Market Square, 301 King St. This is the 36th year the city has held the Days of Remembrance ceremony. The event is free and open to the public.

Landmark/Van Dorn Community Health Walk and Talk

Sat., April 26, 2025,  2 - 4 p.m.

ALIVE Food Hub (510-F South Van Dorn St.) 

Your community, your voice. Join the short walk around the Landmark/Van Dorn area on Sat., April 26, 2025, at 2 p.m., starting at the ALIVE Food Hub where we will talk about the Landmark/Van Dorn neighborhood and how it shapes your health. City staff will be there to hear your feedback on how we can make a difference in our community today and in the future.

PreK-8 Summer Learning Registration Deadline

Sun., April, 27, 2025, 11:59 p.m.

We are looking forward to providing another interactive summer learning experience for our students that focuses on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in grades kindergarten to five and career exploration modules in grades six to eight. Current students in grade eight will also have the opportunity to participate in music, theatre and dance camps or health/PE in-person courses. Alexandria City Community Cookouts Begin!

Mount Vernon Recreation Center (2600 Mount Vernon Ave.) 

The Alexandria Police Department will host various community cookouts, starting in April and concluding in July. Join the community cookouts for a great time with neighbors and families coming together and to connect with community resources. These cookouts are sponsored by a number of nonprofits and City of Alexandria agencies.

Cultural Observance Days

On weekdays, these are regular school days. However, these days should not have assessments, sporting events and other school-sponsored special activities. Any missed assignments due to student absences on these days can be made up without penalty.
