Department of Teaching, Learning and Leadership Welcomes Carmen Sanders as Executive Director of Instructional Support

Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) is pleased to announce that Carmen Sanders has been selected as the executive director of instructional support. She is currently the campus administrator for Alexandria City High School - King Street Campus (ACHS), where she has served since 2019. Previously, Ms. Sanders was an assistant principal at George Washington Middle School (GW) and a dean of students at ACHS. She began her educational career in 2006 as a teacher and served in the classroom until 2012.

“I want to thank Ms. Sanders for her leadership and commitment to our Titans, and I wish her well as she begins her new position in ACPS. Ms. Sanders has been integral to supporting our students and staff to advance their learning and well-being during very challenging years,” Peter Balas, ACHS executive principal said.

In her new leadership role, Ms. Sanders will be providing instructional leadership and support to all schools in ACPS as a member of the Department of Teaching, Learning and Leadership.

“We are excited to have someone with Ms. Sanders’ expertise and years of experience at ACHS and GW as our new executive director of instructional support so she can serve all students in our school division,'' said Dr. Wendy Gonzalez, ACPS chief of teaching, learning and leadership.

Ms. Sanders holds a bachelor’s degree in English-language, literature and composition from Virginia Polytechnic University and a master’s degree in educational administration from Trinity University.

As Ms. Sanders takes on her new leadership position, Christopher Speich will serve as the acting lead campus administrator for ACHS-King Street and Olinka Turner will be the acting lead administrator for specialized instruction.
