October 2024 Cultural Recognitions and Observances

October focuses on the health and wellness of our students in various ways, including Virginia School Board Association’s (VSBA) support of the recognition of National Bullying Prevention Month. This month’s observances also address learning disabilities awareness, school and bus safety and digital citizenship, among others.

Here is a list of observances marked in October:

National Bullying Prevention Month/VSBA Bullying Prevention Month: A month to raise awareness of bullying prevention through events, outreach, and education. Sponsored by Parent Advocacy Coalition for Educational Rights. #UnityEveryDay

Learning Disabilities Awareness Month: This is a month to focus on the incredible abilities so many individuals with learning disabilities possess as well as emphasize the achievements and progress students with learning disabilities have made. Sponsored by the Learning Disabilities Association of America. #BeUnderstood, #LDmonth

National Principals Month: This month offers the opportunity to shine a light on all our wonderful principals.

National Farm-to-School Month: Farm-to-school programs serve healthy meals, improve child nutrition, provide agricultural education opportunities and help students establish a positive relationship with food.

Crime Prevention Month: A month to spread the word about crime prevention and personal safety. Information and materials are available from the National Crime Prevention Council.

Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 15 - Oct. 15, 2024: Designated by presidential proclamation as the month to celebrate the rich heritage of Hispanic Americans and the many contributions they have made to American culture. #ACPSHispanicHeritage #HispanicHeritageMonth

Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 6-12, 2024: This year's theme is “Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work for You!” This is a week to educate the community on the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home. Sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association.

National School Lunch Week, Oct. 14–18, 2024: The theme for this year is “School Lunch Pirates: Find Your Treasure!” The goal is to encourage students to view school lunch as an exciting adventure. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the School Nutrition Association. #NSLW24

Digital Citizenship Week, Oct. 14-18, 2024: A week dedicated to helping students reflect on how their digital lives impact their social and emotional well-being. #DigCitWeek

America's Safe Schools Week, Oct. 20–26, 2024: It is an annual initiative that takes place during the third week of October to promote school safety and security. #SafeSchoolsWeek

National School Bus Safety Week, Oct. 21-25, 2024: This week is a way for all community members to join forces and address the importance of school bus safety. Sponsored by the National Association for Pupil Transportation. #SchoolBusSafetyWeek

Red Ribbon Week, Oct. 23-31, 2024: Programs and observances help create awareness concerning the problems related to the use of tobacco, alcohol and other substances. Attend organized community prevention coalitions and support healthy, productive, drug-free lifestyles. ACPS also participates in the Red Ribbon Week poster contest. #RedRibbonWeek #CelebrateLifeLiveDrugFree

National Custodian Appreciation Day, Oct. 2, 2024: This day recognizes the people who work diligently to keep our schools and workplaces clean and in tip-top shape. #NationalCustodianDay

National Coaches Day, Oct. 6, 2024: This is a day to celebrate those who serve as coaches in all sports. #NationalCoachesDay #CelebrateCoach

National Child Health Day, Oct. 7, 2024: By presidential proclamation, this is a day for adults to help children realize their full potential by promoting health, safety, and good choices.

National Walk & Roll to School Day, Oct. 9, 2024: It is a day to encourage healthier habits and a cleaner environment by having families and children walk to school. Sponsored by the National Center for Safe Routes to School. #WalkRollToSchoolDay

International Day of the Girl Child, Oct. 11, 2024: Sponsored by the United Nations, International Day of the Girl Child recognizes girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world. #DayoftheGirl #IDG2024

National Indigenous Peoples Day, Oct. 14, 2024: This is a day to recognize and celebrate the native inhabitants of the Americas. (This is an ACPS professional development day.)

World Food Day, Oct. 16, 2024: This day serves to promote worldwide awareness and action to help those who suffer from hunger and to recognize the need to ensure healthy diets for all. #WorldFoodDay

National Make a Difference Day, Oct. 26, 2024: A day to encourage children, youth and adults to volunteer on behalf of their communities.
