Potential Kindergarten Lottery for 2025-26 School Year Dual Language Program at John Adams Elementary School

Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) is anticipating a potential kindergarten lottery for the 2025–26 school year for the Dual Language Program at John Adams Elementary School (John Adams), due to a high number of applications for the program.

In accordance with Regulation JC-R/JCD-R, a lottery is required when the number of programmatic transfer applications exceeds the number of available spaces at any grade level. Per the regulation, “If the number of students seeking programmatic transfers to the Dual Language program exceeds the available spaces at any grade level, then all students with new programmatic transfer applications will enter a lottery for random selection.”

Currently, the number of kindergarten applications for the Dual Language Program at John Adams is approaching capacity, which means a lottery will likely be necessary. Families who wish to apply must submit their applications by June 15, 2025, to be considered in the lottery. Notifications will be sent to families by July 1, 2025. Applications received after June 15 will be placed on a waitlist.

To be eligible for the program, priority is given to students who live in the John Adams Elementary School attendance zone. While some transfers may be accepted from outside the John Adams attendance zone, available space for these students is extremely limited and not guaranteed.

Anyone interested in applying for the program should visit the ACPS Program Transfers ACPS website for additional information, which includes the details on how to apply for the program. 

At this time it has not been determined if a lottery will be necessary for the Dual Language Program at Mount Vernon Community School (MVCS). ACPS will send a notification if a lottery will likely be necessary at MVCS. If a lottery is needed at MVCS, the deadline to apply will be July 1, 2025 with notification by August 1, 2025.
