School Board Adopts Policy Changes in Public Comments Process

School Board Adopts Policy Changes in Public Comments Process

At its meeting on May 4, 2023, the Alexandria City School Board adopted changes to the way community members can engage with the Board. The new changes will take effect on July 1, 2023, and can be reviewed online at School Board policy BDDH/KD.

Community members can sign up to speak at the Board meeting using the Public Comments for School Board Meetings form. Previously, members of the public who wished to address the Board virtually were required to notify the Board Clerk in writing or by electronic communications prior to the meeting. Now, the amended policy states that those providing public comments in writing or electronically should notify the Board Clerk by 12 p.m., the day before the School Board meeting.

The amended policy also states that those wishing to speak in person can notify the Board clerk by 12 p.m., the day prior to a Board meeting. Under the revised policy that begins July 1, 2023, the Board will provide a total of five slots for community members to sign up to speak in person in the School Board meeting room (at 1340 Braddock Place) before the School Board meeting, between 5:45 p.m. and 6:15 p.m.

Community members no longer have to bring printed copies of their comments. As of July 1, 2023, the new policy requests that members of the public send their comments via email to boardclerk@acps.k12.va.us.

The Alexandria City School Board encourages the community to engage with the Board. Community members can attend board meetings and submit public comments, use the Ask@ACPS platform or email the School Board directly.
