September 2024 Cultural Recognitions and Observances
September is a power-packed month filled with a multitude of observances. Among September’s highlights is Attendance Awareness Month, which provides a timely reminder concerning the importance of all of our students being in school each day and on time.
Here is a list of additional observances marked in September:
- Library Card Sign Up Month: Established by a joint resolution of Congress as an annual reminder to ensure all children have library cards.
- National Arts in Education Week is Sept. 8-14, 2024. During this week, the field of arts education joins communities across the country to tell the story of the impact of the transformative power of the arts in education.
- International Literacy Day is Sept. 8, 2024. It is a day to highlight the importance of reading, particularly from a multicultural, international perspective.
- Patriot Day is Sept. 11. This is a day to honor the victims who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
- National Suicide Prevention Month and National Suicide Prevention Week, Sept. 8-14, 2024. September is dedicated to raising awareness about suicide prevention from its warning signs to how to get help when in crisis.
- Hispanic Heritage Month begins Sept. 15 and is observed through Oct. 15 each year. This month was designated by a presidential proclamation to celebrate the rich heritage of Hispanic Americans and the many contributions they have made to American culture.
- Constitution Week is Sept. 17-23, 2024. This week we pay tribute to our country's most important founding document and the inalienable rights it affords U.S. citizens.
- National Information Technology (IT) Professionals Day is Sept. 17, 2024. This day honors the information technology professionals who keep our computer and telecommunication systems running smoothly.
- National School Backpack Awareness Day is Sept. 18, 2024. This day is set aside to educate students on how to properly choose, pack, lift and carry backpacks.
