Snapshots From the Superintendent’s School Travels

Dr.Kay-Wyatt with a student.

Visiting Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) and events students participated in over the past few weeks, Superintendent Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt took great pride in seeing firsthand the accomplishments of our students and staff. Those moments are captured in this month’s “Snapshots from the Superintendent’s School Travels”:

On Wednesday, June 4, 2025, Dr. Kay-Wyatt visited students sharing their excitement about the upcoming summer with creative art displays including a Puerto Rican “Piragua” stand and a related song and salsa dance. We learned “piraguas” are fruit flavored shaved ice treats, traditionally found in the Caribbean and in Latin American countries, brought to the United States and enjoyed by many of our students and families.

She also enjoyed time with Samuel W. Tucker students and staff as they worked on creating their own stories during class. It was nice to see all the students excited and engaged in their projects.

During the evening of June 4, 2025, Dr. Kay-Wyatt enjoyed celebrating the service of our 40 ACPS retirees who put in a collective 876 years of service. These workers' positive impact on our students will only be realized over time. Among our outstanding retirees honored this year is Chief Technology Officer Dr. Elizabeth Hoover, who leaves the school division after 30 years of service. The school division thanks Dr. Hoover and all of our ACPS retiring employees for all you have done to ensure our students receive an outstanding, equitable education.

On June 5, 2025, STEM in the Schoolyard at Francis C. Hammond Middle School was a huge success. Enterprise Mobility and American Water volunteers joined Hammond students in this hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) experience that inspires curiosity, builds confidence and shows students the power of discovery. Enterprise Mobility also delivered and distributed 500 backpacks filled with essential school and hygiene supplies. The event is all a part of the United Way of the National Capital Area’s (NCA) Community Schools initiative, a partnership that’s benefited Hammond students academically, socially and emotionally since 2017.

And finally, she enjoyed attending the Middle School promotion ceremonies which are a wonderful way to acknowledge the efforts of our students as they continue their journey into becoming Titans. The last week of school celebrated this milestone with promotions at George Washington MS on June 9, and ceremonies on June 10 for Patrick Henry K-8, Jefferson-Houston PreK-8 IB School and Francis C. Hammond Middle School students.
