ACPS Offers New Financial Incentive to Recruit Qualified Bus Drivers

With a high demand for qualified bus drivers across the nation, Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) is offering a financial recruitment incentive for newly-hired, full-time bus drivers for the school division. This incentive can help increase the volume of transportation applicants and new hires.

Full-time, newly hired bus drivers for ACPS will receive a $3,000 incentive. The funds will be disbursed in two installments:

• $1,500 received at hire.
• $1,500 received January 2023.

ACPS is looking to hire well-qualified bus drivers to transport students over scheduled routes each day as well as to special events. Our drivers ensure the vehicle is in safe operating condition and look out for the safety of students during transport, loading and unloading from buses.

Among other responsibilities, bus drivers:

• Transport passengers over scheduled routes to and from school and/or field trips in a safe and timely manner.
• Monitor students and other passengers during transit to maintain safety and follow district policy.
• Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections (e.g. fluid levels, tire pressure, exterior condition, mirrors, etc.) to ensure the safe operating condition of the vehicle and comply with mandated guidelines.
• Advise students and other passengers of appropriate behavior to reinforce regulations and maintain passenger safety.

Qualified applicants should have:

• Education: High School diploma or equivalent preferred, not required.
• Experience: Job-related experience desired. Good work history and driving record required.
• Certificates and Licenses (can be obtained through ACPS training program):
  • Valid Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger and School Bus Endorsements.
  • CDL 3rd party examiner (DMV).
  • CPR/First Aid Certificate Recommended.
  • SET (State Efficient Transport) Certification Behavior Intervention Training.

ACPS provides a paid training program which includes commercial driver’s license (CDL) certification.

Clearances:

• Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
• Tuberculosis Skin Test.

Public Health Compliance

• Proof of COVID vaccination. Exemptions for religious/medical will be reviewed.
• Must follow safety and health protocols.
