ACPS Welcomes Dr. Erin Cromwell Stone as Director of Special Programs and Related Services
Dr. Erin Cromwell Stone has been selected as the new director of special programs and related services for Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS). Dr. Stone will be responsible for assisting the executive director with planning, administering and directing the division's special education services for students with disabilities in city-wide programs. Taking on this new role Jan. 3, 2023, Dr. Stone will also supervise assigned departmental personnel who provide related services of occupational therapy, physical therapy, audiology or adapted physical education.
“Erin brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her new position as the director of special programs and related services,” said Terry Werner, executive director of specialized instruction. “During her 12 plus years with ACPS, she has been an integral part of the team leading the provision of services to students with disabilities across the division. We are thrilled to have Erin in this new role as she takes the lead to further develop and expand programming for students with multiple challenges in a variety of environments.”
Dr. Stone first joined ACPS in 2010, and most recently has served as assistant director for citywide programs and behavior services. She previously served as an autism and behavior services program coordinator, autism program coordinator and as a board-certified behavior analyst for the school division.
Before joining ACPS, Dr. Stone was the educational director/clinical director at Milestone School for Child Development along with serving as the director of operations at Hanover Place Child Care, both in New York City, New York. She has also worked as a program consultant, school psychologist, psychological evaluator and special education teacher in New York City. Her career in education began in 1993 in Tampa, Florida, as a teacher of students with emotional disabilities.
In addition to her work in K-12 education, Dr. Stone has served as an adjunct professor, presenting graduate level courses at Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts; George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia; and St. John’s University in New York, New York. She also taught undergraduate courses at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York.
Dr. Stone earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the University of South Florida and a master’s degree in special education at the College of William & Mary with concentrations in emotional disturbances and learning disabilities. She has a Doctor of Philosophy in clinical and school psychology from Hofstra University. Dr. Stone is also a board-certified behavior analyst at the doctoral level with professional licenses in Virginia and New York as a special education teacher, school psychologist and licensed in administration and supervision.
