ACPS Welcomes Dr. Marcia Jackson as Chief of Student Services and Equity
ACPS is pleased to announce that Dr. Marcia Jackson has been selected for the new role of chief of student services and equity at Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS). In this position, Dr. Jackson will provide division-wide leadership and oversight for the Offices of Student Services, Student Support Teams, and Equity and Alternative Programs to include the Juvenile Detention Center, shelter care program and social emotional and academic learning (SEAL). She began transitioning into this role on Dec. 12, 2022, from her previous one as the executive director of student services.
Interim superintendent Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt said, “Please join me in welcoming Dr. Jackson as our next chief of student services and equity! In this vital role, she will oversee equity, anti-racism and cultural competence initiatives and lead our work in addressing student well-being and mental health. We are thrilled to have Dr. Jackson’s breadth of experience and skill set to direct the development and implementation of key programs that support our students’ well-being and learning.”
Dr. Jackson joined ACPS in 2015 and has served within the Department of Student Services and Equity to remove barriers to educational opportunities for ACPS students, initially as the director of K-12 school counseling and then as executive director of student services. Prior to joining ACPS, Dr. Jackson served as the supervisor of K-12 school counseling with Arlington Public Schools and had also been an assistant principal in Washington, D.C. Dr. Jackson began her career in education as an elementary math and science teacher in Prince George’s County, Md. She also held elementary and high school counselor positions in Maryland during her 24-year career.
Dr. Jackson earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Louisiana Tech University. She earned a master’s degree in school counseling from The George Washington University and a master’s degree in educational administration from Trinity University. Dr. Jackson has a doctorate in educational administration and policy studies from The George Washington University.
In addition to her K-12 education experience, Dr. Jackson has had the opportunity to shape the next generation of school leaders and school counselors as an adjunct professor with The George Washington University. She is a published author and enjoys writing short stories, poems and novels.
