Complete the ACPS Summer Learning Application Today!

As we head off to Spring Break, Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) is thrilled to announce that we are continuing our summer learning enrichment programs for all current PreK-7 students! High school summer learning is based on program enrollment, students’ need for credit recovery courses or new credit courses. Enrollment must be completed by the program coordinator or school counselor.

Below you will find more information about logistics, teaching positions and the curriculums being used for in-person summer learning. You can also visit the ACPS Summer Learning 2023 webpage for more information on specific summer programs and points of contact.

If you already know that you are interested in applying, you may complete the ACPS Summer Learning Application today! When you apply early you can expect offer letters from Human Resources (HR) beginning Mon., May 1, 2023. The deadline for submitting applications is Sun., May 7, 2023, at 11:59 p.m.

Summer Learning 2023 Dates (In-person, PreK-7)

Mon., June 26, 2023, through Thurs., July 20, 2023:

  • No school on Fridays
  • No school on Tues., July 4, 2023

Summer Learning 2023 Hours             

  • PreK and Grades K-4 (includes Young Scholars): 8 a.m.-12 p.m.
  • Dual Language: 8 a.m.-12 p.m.
  • Grades 5-7, Dual Language Summer Bridge and Theatre Camp: 8:45 a.m.-1 p.m.
  • High School and Music Camp: 9:30 a.m.- 2:30 p.m. (For in-person classes)
  • High School Online: Dates and times variable and flexible
  • Special Education:
    • PreK: 9-11 a.m.
    • K-12: 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Please note: Teachers are to report 30 minutes before student arrival and stay after dismissal times (elementary school staff will report at 7:40 a.m.).

Summer Learning 2023 Pay

$48 per hour, paid one extra hour for early/late report time to support arrival and dismissal.

In-Person Bonus

$500 incentive pay for every two weeks worked and will be prorated.

First two weeks: June 26-July 7, 2023, total of seven work days ($71.43 per day) will be paid in the July 31, 2023, summer learning paycheck.

Last two weeks: July 10-20, 2023, total of eight work days ($62.50 per day) will be paid in the Aug. 15, 2023, summer learning paycheck.

Please be advised, due to funding, this will be the last year for the in-person bonus. Next year, there will be no bonus for the 2024 summer learning program.

Pre-K teachers will facilitate lessons focused on students exploring their five senses. Grades K-4 STEM teachers will facilitate the Camp Invention program. Curricula come ready to implement on the first day with scripted lessons and all materials needed. Summer learning STEM teachers will facilitate the following collaborative, creative, problem-solving Camp Invention modules: Catching Air and Mimic Bot. ELA/math teachers will be provided with scripted daily lesson plans to engage students in building their skills throughout the summer. For math, teachers will be provided an easy-to-follow curriculum from Camp Invention to engage students in fun daily "Fair Games" activities. For English language arts, teachers will receive structured daily guidance for read-alouds, small group reading support and Really Great Reading's summer school phonics package. Young Scholars students will be joining the elementary summer learning program and participating in the Camp Invention curriculum.

Middle school program teachers will facilitate hands-on, project-based modules using the Engineering is Everywhere curriculum. Grade five students will participate in: Here Comes the SunOutbreak AlertShake Things Up and The Sky’s the Limit. Grade six and seven students will participate in Light Up the NightPlants to Plastics and It's About Time.

Elementary and middle school English language (EL) teachers will collaborate with grade level teams to implement scaffolds and EL best practices into daily instruction. Special education support teachers will be working to support classroom teachers with differentiation best practices using the curriculum provided, and supporting students as needed. Extended School Year (ESY) special education teachers will provide ESY service minutes as outlined on the ESY Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Special education intervention teachers will be instructing students using specific reading and math intervention programs.

The dual language K-4 teachers will be provided with daily lesson plans to engage students in building their language skills throughout the summer. The Summer Language Academy focuses on providing enriched experiences in both program languages through the study of Spanish-speaking countries' histories, geographies and environments. The Dual Language Summer Bridge teachers will be provided daily lesson plans to support soon-to-be middle schoolers. This program will run July 10-20, 2023, at George Washington Middle School.

Music Camp teachers will instruct current fourth through eighth grade students, July 10-20, Monday-Thursday, at Alexandria City High School - King Street Campus with level-appropriate instrumental music instruction. Camp will conclude with a final performance on Thurs., July 20, 2023. Theatre Camp teachers will instruct current sixth through eighth grade students, June 26-July 13, Monday-Thursday (no camp Tues., July 4, 2023) at George Washington Middle School. Students will have the opportunity to learn about stage acting, as well as many technical theater elements such as set design and build, lighting, sound, costumes and make-up.
