Enhance Your VRS Life Insurance Coverage During Special Enrollment

Virginia Retirement System (VRS), in partnership with Securian Financial Group, has increased the available coverage for the optional life insurance to VRS members to up to eight times their salary. Previously, the maximum coverage was four times annual salary.

To allow eligible employees to newly enroll or increase their coverage with the optional life insurance, VRS has opened up a special enrollment period from Oct. 1, 2022, through Nov. 30, 2022, for optional life insurance benefits. Eligible employees include full-time permanent, salaried employees.

Normally, new hires have just 31 days to apply for optional life insurance without proof of good health. During this special enrollment period, VRS members who have not yet elected optional life insurance benefits are able to enroll without submitting a health questionnaire.

Employees already enrolled in the optional life insurance program have the opportunity to also increase their coverage by one level without completing a health questionnaire.

Throughout the enrollment period, VRS will begin notifying employees through email and direct mail of the special enrollment opportunities available through November. Employees can enroll in optional life insurance through their myVRS account. Information about the optional life insurance is available on the VRS website, www.varetire.org.
