Upcoming National Board Certification Information Session

Upcoming National Board Certification Information Session

If you are ready to take your teaching career to the next level, join the Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) Office of School Leadership on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2022, at 3:30 p.m. for a National Board Certification information session held on Zoom.

National Board Certified Teachers (NBCT) have earned the teaching profession’s highest honor. The certification process identifies accomplished teachers through a rigorous program that includes four components: one exam and three portfolio submissions. Through NBCT, dedicated teachers demonstrate their commitment to teaching and maintaining the industry’s highest standards.

The benefits of National Board Certification include:

  • Improves student achievement and learning.
  • Provides an opportunity for teachers to grow and challenge themselves.
  • Recognizes accomplished teachers.
  • Can lead to increased salary and leadership opportunities.

To be eligible for certification, applicants must:

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Have at least two FULL years of teaching experience by the end of the 2021-22 school year.
  • Hold a valid teaching license.

ACPS supports a two-year submission timeframe where teachers participate in monthly meetings, are part of a professional learning community and receive support on the technical aspects of the process. ACPS will fund most of the $2,050 cost for the majority of selected candidates, but spaces are limited.

To start the National Board Certification process:

  • Attend the information session on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2022, at 3:30 p.m. hosted on Zoom.
  • Learn more about NBCT by visiting https://www.nbpts.org/.
  • Complete an NBCT cohort application by Friday, Sept. 23, 2022, at 3:30 p.m.

If new candidates have questions, staff can contact Katy Pattarini by emailing kathyrn.pattarini@acps.k12.va.us. All former renewal candidates may reach out to Melissa King at melissa.king@acps.k12.va.us.
