Community Service Projects
AVID Students as leaders
As part of the AVID System and suggested curriculum, students work to develop their student agency and leadership skills while in AVID. This may come in the form of a :60-second instruction speech, a peer mentoring opportunity or through formal means of service learning and/or community service experiences of interest.
Exposure to various types of service groups and partners in the community is key. However as student grow in their voice, choice, and interest, AVID encourages them to hone in on a passion and dedicate more time.
During this time of service, students develop a sense of self and learn how to ask for what they need. Additionally, they are able to practice communication skills and learn how to build relationships across various ages, races, and ethnicities as they work to problem solve and support the global community at large. Additional Problem-Based Learning, or PBL, experiences developed by their AVID teachers may serve to inspire students along the way.
