Family Life Education
ACPS Family Life Education Curriculum Information and Guidelines
The Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) Family Life Education curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive, sequential K-10 program that includes age-appropriate instruction in family living and community relationships, abstinence education, human sexuality and reproduction, and the value of postponing sexual activity.
Instruction is designed to promote parental involvement, foster positive self-concepts, and provide mechanisms for coping with peer pressure and the stresses of modern living according to the students' developmental stages and abilities.
Lessons are taught throughout the school year by the Health and PE teachers in grades K-10 at all ACPS schools.
Parents have the right to review the complete family life curricula, including all supplemental materials used in any family life education program. Please see below under Right to Review and exempt their child from any Family Life Education unit.

Right to Review
A parent or guardian has the right to review the family life curricula, including all supplemental materials used in the program. These are kept in each school’s library media center or PE office and made available for review to any parent/guardian during school office hours before and during the school year. The audio-visual materials are made available to parents/guardians for in-person review, upon request. Please contact your child's Health & PE teacher(s) to schedule a time for preview.
