PreK-8 Analysis
From May 2024 to Aug. 2024, a pre-K-8 analysis and evaluation will be conducted at Jefferson-Houston PreK-8 School and Patrick Henry K-8 School by an independent contractor. The purpose of the analysis and evaluation is to determine if these programmatic models should be maintained and, if not, what are the human, programmatic, operational and fiscal implications of other models. Final recommendations will be shared with the Alexandria City School Board to determine whether or not the grade level configuration of these schools should be changed.
ACPS previously conducted a grade-level configuration study in 2017, which gave a national perspective on pre-K-8 models. ACPS is now looking for a specific analysis of its pre-K-8 schools to determine if these programmatic models should be maintained and, if not, what are the human, programmatic, operational and fiscal implications of other models.
School and community members may submit questions about the process.

PreK-8 Analysis Update
Aug. 21, 2024
The PreK-8 Analysis is progressing and we are nearing completion. The consultants have made significant progress and are currently in the process of analyzing all relevant data to develop various models based on the following potential scenarios:
- Scenario 1: Jefferson-Houston PreK-8 IB School remains a Pre-K-8 and Patrick Henry K-8 School remains a K-8 school.
The scenario will offer guidance for improvement, focusing on optimizing the current structure to better serve students and families. - Scenario 2: Jefferson-Houston and Patrick Henry return to being K-5 schools, with middle school students attending the two comprehensive middle schools.
This scenario will examine the impact of redistributing middle school students to existing comprehensive middle schools. - Scenario 3: Jefferson-Houston and Patrick Henry return to being K-5 schools, and a new middle school is proposed.
The analysis will consider the feasibility and impact of constructing a new middle school to accommodate students. - Scenario 4: Jefferson-Houston and Patrick Henry become comprehensive middle schools, with elementary students dispersed to appropriate feeder schools.
This scenario will explore the transition of JH and PH into middle schools and the redistribution of elementary students. - Scenario 5: One of the K-8 schools, either Jefferson-Houston or Patrick Henry, becomes a middle school, while the other returns to a K-5 school.
The scenario will analyze the implications of converting one school to a middle school and the other to a K-5 school.
Additionally, the consultants will provide two alternative scenarios that may arise during the evaluation process. Each scenario will be detailed, with associated costs and impacts clearly identified. The analysis will include the following considerations:
- The number of staff impacted
- The number of families impacted
- Operating costs
- Capital costs
- Time required for implementation
- Implementation costs
These details will be meticulously estimated to ensure that ACPS can effectively plan for the future.
The final presentation of the entire analysis, including models and recommendations, is scheduled for the September 2024 ACPS School Board meeting. After this presentation, there will be an opportunity to provide feedback to inform future school board decision-making.
