Summer Learning: Current High School Students (In-Person)

In-Person Summer Learning for Current 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th Grade Students

To register for the Alexandria City High School summer program (Grades 9-12), students must contact their school counselor. ACHS School Counselors manage all registrations and will open on March 23, 2026 for seniors and April 7th for underclassmen. *Underclassmen can only take one summer course and term grads can take up to three. 

  • Senior Registration Begins: March 23rd 
  • Underclassmen (Grades 9-11) Registration Begins: April 7th
  • Registration Closes: May 1st
  • Online Course Registration Closes: May 15th

When taking any summer course, all ACPS students are expected to follow the ACPS Honor Code.

Some high school programs are available to all students, while others require a student to sign up and potentially pay to enroll in a class. Students can sign up for the following classes by contacting their school counselor.

  • New credit courses (in-person or online) cost $285.00
  • Credit recovery courses are free
  • Any student who is eligible for Free or Reduced Price Meals can access these classes for $60.

Credit Bearing Classes

In-Person Classes for Credit Recovery (repeat courses)

Free of charge for any student needing credit recovery. Credit recovery is when a student needs to repeat a course that they previously did not pass.

  • English
    • English 9, 10, 11, 12
  • Social Studies
    • World history I and II, US/VA History, US/VA Government
  • Science
    • Biology, Biology II, Earth Science
  • Math
    • Algebra 1, AFDA, Algebra 2, Geometry
  • Economics & Personal Finance

APA Health and Physical Education Online Classes for Credit Recovery (repeat courses) **NEW CHANGE**

Health and PE 9/10 Credit Recovery is no longer offered in person. This course is free for any student who needs to make up HPE 9 or HPE 10.

School counselors will enroll eligible students in the course.

    • The credit-recovery course does not include Driver’s Education.

  • Two unexcused absences will result in withdrawal from the Summer Learning program.
  • Three tardies will count as one absence.

Please ensure your availability before committing to the program. 

Confirmation of Enrollment will be sent out by the summer learning staff.

Current 8 (rising 9th grade) students may only take HPE 9 for their one new credit course.

This course includes lessons in Health, Physical Education, and Family Life Instruction.

 Health & PE 10 NEW Credit (Blended Learning)

Schedule: (In-Person & Canvas)

The Virginia Driver Education program requires 36 periods of classroom instruction.  Due to this requirement, a 6-week blended learning approach is necessary to cover physical education, health, and family life education standards of learning that are part of HPE 10. 

Please note: This program has a strict attendance policy for all enrolled students. If your summer plans prevent you from attending in person for the full duration of the course, you will not be eligible to enroll.

  • Two unexcused absences will result in withdrawal from the Summer Learning program.
  • Three tardies will count as one absence.

Please ensure your availability before committing to the program.

Confirmation of Enrollment will be sent out by the summer learning staff.

    • Week 4: July 8 & 9 (VDOE required Fitness Testing days)

To register for the Alexandria City High School summer program (grades 9-12), students must contact their school counselor. All registrations are managed by ACHS School Counselors and will begin on Monday, April 7th.


Non- Credit Bearing Classes

AP Bootcamp (in-person) 

The ACPS boot camp is designed for first-time AP students. The boot camp coursework helps students focus on the skills necessary to successfully complete a year in any Advanced Placement course. This goal is achieved through experiences designed to encourage teamwork, communication, organization, critical reading and writing as well as problem-solving.

  • 1st session: Monday - Thursday, June 22-25th
  • 2nd session: Monday-Thursday, June 29- July 2nd
  • No school on Fridays

24/7 Online Tutoring
A free, 24/7 tutoring service is available to all ACPS students in grades 6-12. Every session is one-on-one and individualized to the subject matter.
Accessing online tutor support for students:

  • Connect with a tutor (less than 60 second wait time)
