Coming Up for Summer 2024: Community Engagement and Calendar Reminders

Learn about calendar reminders and upcoming community events for July and August. Find out when the Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) Community Outreach team will be in your neighborhood!

Improve Your English Speaking Skills! (Beginner and intermediate conversation)

Various dates and locations.

The Alexandria Library invites all those interested to join a conversation group to practice English and gain confidence. No registration is needed, just come!

Summer Breakfast & Lunch Program
Mon., June 24, 2024 - Thurs., July 18, 2024

All ACPS students and children under 18 can receive free meals this summer, Monday through Thursday, when they visit one of six ACPS sites. The program runs from June 24, 2024 - July 18, 2024. Site details and schedules are available online. Meal distribution will not occur on July 4, 2024.

Hello High School

Wed., July 24, from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m.

Wed., July 31, from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m.

Sat., Aug. 3, from 12 - 1 p.m.

Sat., Aug. 10, from 12 - 1 p.m.

In July and August, on-site tours will be given of the ACHS high school campuses for students and their families. A sign-up link will be provided by ACHS in July once students are assigned their base location.

Community Cookouts

Various dates and locations (see below) 

The Alexandria Police Department is hosting community cookouts throughout the summer. The cookouts are sponsored by various nonprofit organizations and City of Alexandria agencies.

The following cookouts will be held from 6 - 7:30 p.m.

  • Tue., July 9, at Mount Vernon Recreation Center
  • Tue., July 16, at SouthPort Apartments
  • Tue., July 23, at  Princess Square Apartments

ALIVE! Food Distributions

Various dates and locations (see below)

ALIVE! Food Hubs offer free food, personal items, cleaning supplies, school supplies and referrals to other services. ALIVE! Food Hubs are for City of Alexandria residents. Proof of Alexandria residency may be requested. Please note that both Food Hubs will be closed on Sat., June 29, 2024. Learn about additional ALIVE! Pop-Up Food Distributions that will take place in neighborhoods and apartment buildings this summer.

  • Food Hub at 510-F South Van Dorn Street
    • Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays: 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. (closed from 2 -3 p.m.)
    • Saturdays: 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
  • Food Hub at 2601 Mount Vernon Avenue
    • Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays: 12-6 p.m. (closed from 2 - 3 p.m.)
    • Saturdays: 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

All ACPS schools and offices are closed in observance of Independence Day.

275th City of Alexandria Birthday Celebration
Sat., July 13 from 6 - 10 p.m.
Oronoco Bay Park (100 Madison Street)

The City of Alexandria celebrates its 275th birthday and the USA’s 248th birthday on Sat., July 13, with a performance by the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra and a grand finale fireworks display at 9:30 p.m. Enjoy the big birthday experience including cupcakes, local vendors and live music.

Community Family Picnic

Leonard Chick Armstrong Recreation Center (25 West Reed Avenue)

Join the Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities and gather with friends, family and fellow Alexandrians for an evening of activities and entertainment in the park.

Samuel W. Tucker Elementary Step Up to Kindergarten

Fri., July 19

Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School will host a half-day of orientation for incoming kindergarten students. This introduction to the school experience before the official start of the school year helps incoming kindergarten students become familiar with their schools, classrooms and teachers so they can feel more comfortable on the first day of school.

Family Dance Night

Fri., July 26 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Charles Houston Recreation Center (901 Wythe Street)

Join the Charles Houston Recreation Center for Family Dance Night! Families will learn a dance that is suitable for all ages and lots of family fun. There will be an instructor, refreshments and music to keep everyone dancing. Families with preschool children, families of tweens and teens, grandparents and everyone in between will have a good time. Please register in advance.

National Night Out
Tue., Aug. 1

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie. Nearly three dozen Alexandria communities will host activities. Exact times and events vary by neighborhood. More information will be shared on ACPS social media as the date approaches.

Students do not have school on Aug. 30, 2024, and Sept. 2, 2024. All ACPS schools and offices will be closed on Sept. 2, 2024 in observance of the Labor Day holiday.
