School Board Policy Update
At the Alexandria City School Board meeting on May 29, 2025, the School Board amended two policies, the superintendent amended three regulations and established one new regulation. The following is a summary of the key changes, details are available on BoardDocs.
IICA - Field Trips
IICA-R - Field Trip Procedures
IICA-R2 - International Cultural Experience Programs
- Five-year review.
- Requested review.
- Standard changes.
- Model policy alignment.
- Added definition of the types of field trips.
- Reorganized content to improve readability.
- Updated the transportation request process to ensure timely requests.
- Added a section on medical procedures.
- Created a new regulation for international cultural experience programs.
IICAB - Use of Private Vehicles for Transporting Students (also GDP)
- Five-year review.
- Removed option for general use of private vehicles for field trips, in its place added a list of exceptions.
JEA-R3 - Pre-K Attendance Regulations
- New regulation.
- Establishes attendance tracking and monitoring procedures for Pre-K students.
- Regulation is based on JEA-R.
JEC-R2 - Kindergarten and Grade One Placements
- Requested review.
- Added Pre-K placement process.
ACPS has over 400 policies and regulations, which are systematically revised prior to being presented to the School Board for information. The revision process includes alignment with the associated Virginia School Board Association (VSBA) model policy, alignment with the Code of Virginia, an equity review, a legal review, revisions by a team of staff members, a senior leadership team review, and a School Board policy committee review. Public input on proposed revisions is taken at School Board policy committee meetings and regular School Board meetings.
