ACPS Title I Programs and School Improvement Information
The Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) Office of Title I Programs and School Improvement provides leadership in the coordination of division offices and programs to implement school support structures. The purpose of the Title I, Part A grant is to ensure that all children are afforded the opportunity to receive an equitable, and high-quality education as part of the division’s commitment to closing educational equity and opportunity gaps.
Our office ensures meaningful compliance and integration of both state and federal expectations for academic achievement and school improvement under various federal and state programs, including federal school improvement programs.
The Office of Title I Programs and School Improvement operationalizes division requirements for the expenditure of approximately $5M of federal funds under Title I programs and sub-programs. Title I funds provide supplemental assistance to schools with high concentrations of students living under low-income circumstances.
All Title I schools in ACPS operate Schoolwide Programs. This means that the instructional programs in these schools are supplemented to ensure the needs of all the students they serve are met, and supplemental instructional and social-emotional academic learning (SEAL) supports are provided for any student demonstrating academic needs.
On Dec. 10, 2015, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was signed into law. Section 1112(e)(1)(A) states that all families attending Title I schools have the right to request information about the qualifications of the classroom staff working with their child(ren). If requested, the school division will provide families with answers to the following questions as soon as possible:
Whether the teacher has met state qualification and licensing criteria for the grade levels and subject areas in which the teacher provides instruction.
Whether the teacher is teaching under emergency or other provisional status because of special circumstances.
Whether the teacher is teaching in the field of discipline of the certification or degree he/she received.
Whether paraprofessionals provide services to your child and, if so, their qualifications.
The Virginia Department of Education maintains a web portal which may answer all of these questions. However, for certain new teachers, the information may not be updated immediately.
