Patrick Henry K-8 Modernization

Patrick Henry K-8 School is a modernized K through 8th grade campus designed to support both educational and community needs in the City of Alexandria. Designed by Moseley Architects and constructed by Whiting-Turner, the approximately 138,600-square-foot facility accommodates around 900 students and reflects a collaborative, high-performance design approach.

The project was developed through close coordination with the City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities, resulting in a co-located recreation center that supports both school and community use. This joint-use model provides shared access to amenities such as gymnasiums, multipurpose spaces, outdoor fields, and dedicated recreation spaces, extending the building’s value beyond the school day. The facility incorporates sustainable design strategies and achieved LEED Silver certification, demonstrating a commitment to energy efficiency, environmental responsibility, and long-term operational performance.

2013–2014 | Planning & Community Engagement
Initial feasibility studies and joint planning efforts begin between Alexandria City Public Schools and the City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities to explore a co-located school and recreation center model.

2015 | Design Development Initiated
Moseley Architects is engaged to lead the design, focusing on a collaborative school and community facility with shared spaces.

2016-17 | Construction Begins
Groundbreaking and major construction activities begin, led by Whiting-Turner. Building structure completed and interior systems installation progresses, including both academic and recreation components.

2018 | Project Completion & Occupancy
Facility opens to students and the community, delivering a modernized K–8 school and integrated recreation center. Ongoing joint use of indoor and outdoor facilities supports school programming during the day and community recreation in evenings and weekends.
