Non-Capacity Projects Overview

• Stadium audio/visual- materials have been ordered and are in fabrication. Site mobilization and protection will commence mid-April, followed by excavation, rebar installation and concrete pour in May. Delivery and installation of steel posts and equipment are scheduled for late May.
• Cistern- materials ordered and in fabrication. Delivery anticipated for late summer/early fall.
• Auditorium- invitation to bid has been posted for audio/visual work. A pre-bid meeting and site walk is scheduled for early April.
• Planetarium- the purchase order for the painting of the existing planetarium dome has been issued. Coordination with school administration is underway on site specific information to accommodate equipment.

• Summer asbestos remediation scope is complete and pricing has been received.

   

   

   

• Courtyard design option has been selected, allowing the engineering to refine the stormwater management (SWM) design.

• Summer asbestos remediation scope is complete and pricing has been received.

• VAC- chiller project pre-bid meeting and site walk were held. Contractor questions are forthcoming.

• SWM/Pavement- the engineer has prepared civil drawings to address the underground SWM and re-paving of limited areas.

• Flooring- final LVT has been installed running from the health suite hallway to the gymnasium.

• Spring Break renovation work completed (dance studio entrance foyer ceiling, LED lights).

George Washington MS- New Athletic Fields

The Office of Educational Facilities hosted a virtual community meeting on Thursday, October 27, 2022, to provide a brief overview to the community on the improvements to the athletic fields at George Washington Middle School. The design phase is ongoing, with construction anticipated to begin in Fall 2023.

Updates

Since the last community meeting, the Design Team has made progress on the George Washington Athletic Fields Renovation project, including the following:

• Continued evaluation of the option to use an organic infill material (Brockfill) for the field infill in lieu of rubber infill (Envirofill) and recommends the use of an organic infill material.

• Evaluated the potential for relocation of the artificial turf field to the “upper field” (east) location for potential cost savings. The resultant trade-off in costs vs. savings for on site, bio-retention facilities made this option a non-viable consideration.

• Continuous work with City departments to develop the project’s tree protection plan as well as a tree survey and inventory.

• Design efforts will continue around the site to further define any visual or physical impacts, to further refine aesthetic considerations, and to identify potential schedule impacts. Accordingly, construction will be delayed for the time being as these efforts are explored and implemented.

• Educational Facilities will provide quarterly updates to the community on the aforementioned efforts and design progress.

• Library lobby ceiling renovation completed and new LED lights installed.

• Pavement- the engineer has prepared civil drawings to address the sheet flow of SWM and re-paving of limited areas.

• Asbestos remediation and concrete leveling completed in the auxiliary gymnasium.

   

Lyles Crouch Outdoor Learning Space

The Office of Educational Facilities hosted a virtual community meeting on Tuesday, November 15, 2022, to provide a brief overview of the improvements to the Lyles Crouch outdoor learning and play space. The design phase is ongoing. The Educational Facilities team will host another meeting in early 2023 to garner more community feedback and review design concepts.

Updates

Since the last community meeting, the Design Team has made progress on the Outdoor Learning and Play Space project, including the following:

• Met with the physical education staff to establish their programmatic requirements, equipment storage needs, and general concerns for student play and instruction.

• Reviewed Conceptual Scheme 1 (Retain and Enhance) and Conceptual Scheme 2 (Reimagine and Simplify) with physical education and teaching staff for further discussion. Copies of these schemes are attached as part of this update.

• Contacted the City’s Transportation & Environmental Services (T & ES) Sanitary Infrastructure Division to better understand the City’s request for additional stormwater storage capacity below the planned synthetic turf field. The stormwater capacity request relates to sewer separation in the Old Town area to comply with EPA mandates, as well as addressing volume in the historically flood-prone area.

• ACPS Educational Facilities was advised by T & ES that several possible stormwater mitigation scenarios were under consideration. A final decision on which design scenario will be implemented is forthcoming.

• Each mitigation scenario impacts the site development differently, so Conceptual Development strategies will vary depending on the mitigation strategy selected.

• In order to conserve available fees, ACPS Educational Facilities requested that the Design Team pause their efforts until a preferred solution has been identified by the City.

• New chiller and solids separator components have been delivered and will be installed during Summer Break.

• Asbestos remediation and floor leveling were completed in three rooms over Spring Break.

   

   

• LVT installation completed in the staff lounge and administrative offices.

• Window replacement- shop drawings are completed and fabrication is ongoing.

   

   

• Kitchen renovation- requests for information (RFIs) are ongoing. The contractor has mobilized to the site.

• Stairwell asbestos remediation and leveling are completed.

• Pavement- asphalt milling and new paving in the upper parking area, travelway and bus loop were completed over Spring Break.

• Summer asbestos remediation scope is complete and pricing has been received.

   

• Lobby luxury vinyl tile (LVT) and stairwell rubber flooring has been installed.

• Modular furniture, fixture, and equipment (FFE) delivery and installation is complete.
