ALEXANDRIA, Va.—The Alexandria City School Board approved a motion during its meeting on June 1, 2023, for final adoption of the Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 Combined Funds Budget of $361.9 million and Capital Improvement Programs (CIP) of $51.3 million.

The School Board motion to adopt the FY 2024 Final Combined Funds Budget reflects all budget adjustments recommended by the School Board and Interim Superintendent Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt since Feb. 16, 2023, when the FY 2024 Combined Funds Budget was approved for submission to the Alexandria City Council. The Council adopted its FY 2024 budget for the City of Alexandria on May 3, 2023.

“The FY 2024 budget for Alexandria City Public Schools reflects a tremendous amount of work by staff, Interim Superintendent Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt and our Board, as well as our collaboration with City of Alexandria leaders and community members. It ensures funding for our top priorities – student learning, staff compensation, security and facilities,” said Board Chair Meagan L. Alderton. “It is critical that we have the budget resources in place to support our teachers and students and advance academic excellence in ACPS in the coming school year.”

The ACPS Combined Funds Budget for FY 2024 of $361.9 million includes the Operating Budget, which includes Grants, and Special Projects, and School Nutrition Services funds. The ACPS Operating Budget of $333.4 million for FY 2024 is an increase of 4.2% from last year’s budget and includes improvements to employee salary and benefits so that ACPS remains competitive in the region in recruiting and retaining high quality staff. There is also increased funding for English Learner instruction positions, Grades K-4 literacy, high school math, school security services and athletic program planning and supports.

“With the Board’s adoption of the Final FY 2024 Budget, we are able to bolster employee retention and recruitment efforts so our students continue to have the amazing teachers we are so proud of in our classrooms. We also appreciate the resources that support innovation and well-being which are vital to positively impacting our learning environments and student success,” said Interim Superintendent Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt.

The ten-year CIP budget includes $460.8M in funding for non-capacity projects, textbooks, vehicle replacements, additional renovation costs for 1703 N. Beauregard Street, and new building projects for the George Mason Elementary School and Cora Kelly School for Math, Science and Technology. A leased space renovation project is included in FY 2025 and FY 2026 for Chance for Change and a portion of the costs for another elementary school modernization is included in FY 2033.

In keeping with its commitment to place racial equity at the heart of all its decision making, the School Board’s approved Budget supports the continued focus and implementation of the 2025 Strategic Plan: Equity for All
