Equity & Cultural Competence
In Alexandria City Public Schools, our collective goal is to remove barriers to a healthy, safe, holistic, rigorous and supportive academic experience. Each of our students deserves a positive learning environment where both their identity and culture are represented and respected. Through developing our cultural competency and utilizing the equitable practices within our district, our schools aim to be a place where students can learn about themselves and the world around them with empathy, curiosity, and a commitment to global citizenship.
In an environment where equity exists, barriers are removed and staff and students receive what they need in order to achieve the standards agreed upon by local, state and federal entities and the strategic plan goals.
Equitable learning environments:
-
Provide sustained professional development on equity best practices
-
Center a community approach focused on developing a culture of belonging for each student
-
Model consistency, collaboration and communication with all students, staff, and families
-
Aim to elevate the voices of those who have been historically underrepresented
-
Create an organizational mindset where all decisions, policies, and practices are examined and created using an equity lens
