SEL CASEL Assessment for Students in Grades 3 - 12

Families:

As part of ACPS’s commitment to Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), schools will administer an assessment for students in grades 3–12 to measure their skills in the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) Competencies. This self-assessment helps educators better understand each student’s strengths and areas for growth in self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. The results will be used to inform instruction and support that foster student well-being and success. Our goal is to ensure every child continues to build the skills needed for lifelong success in and beyond the classroom.

Sample assessment questions include:

  • I know what makes me feel happy, sad, bored, or upset.
  • I can recognize how my emotions influence my actions.
  • I can identify how my emotions influence my actions.
  • I notice when someone might feel excluded and take steps to include them.
  • I can manage stress in healthy ways (e.g., taking a break, exercising, talking to someone).

It is important for parents or guardians to know:

  • The assessment will be completed in both the fall of 2025 and spring of 2026
  • All of the questions have been reviewed by the division and are deemed appropriate for use by teachers of students in grades three through twelve.
  • You have the right to opt-out your child.
  • Access to the results of the CASEL assessment will be limited to those who directly serve the student (e.g., classroom teacher, school counselor, nurse, psychologist, social worker, principal)
  • Schools will have access to their students’ results. The School Support Team (SST) will use the results to develop tiered support. This support may include classroom lessons, small group sessions, individual skill-building activities, and counseling for students.

Please indicate your child’s participation in the CASEL assessment during the 2025-26 school year by completing the opt out form below:
