Band and Orchestra
The Naomi L. Brooks Instrumental Music Program is directed by Ms. Laura Bridges, and is open to all students in grades 4 and 5.
Students are recruited and introduced to all available instruments during the second half of their 3rd-grade year.
We offer a wide range of musical opportunities for our children:

After choosing their top three favorite instruments, students are assigned one of their choices. Classes start during the first week of
Classes start during the first week of school and are held weekly. If needed, additional instrumental support is provided after school.
Students participate in two major public performances: a Winter and Spring Concert, which are typically held in December and June. Students may also participate in a plethora of outside performances, such as All-City Band, All-City Orchestra, Fiddle Fest, Solo and Ensemble Festival, and the Children’s Concert Series with the NOVA Alexandria Band.

Ms. Laura Bridges, Band and Orchestra Teacher
Ms. Laura Bridges has been the Band and Orchestra Teacher at Matthew Maury Elementary School for the past two years. In 2013, Ms. Bridges graduated magna cum laude from James Madison University with a Bachelor’s of Music in Instrumental Music Education, and a minor in Jazz Studies. During her tenure at JMU, Ms. Bridges performed in many esteemed ensembles, such as the Marching Royal Dukes, Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, “Little MAC” Clarinet Quartet, and various JMU Jazz Combos. She also served many leadership positions, such as section leader for the MRD Clarinet Section, co-principal chair of Wind Symphony and Symphony Orchestra, and President of the Madison Association of Clarinetists. Laura’s main influences and inspiration derive from her previous directors and teachers, including, Dr. Janice Minor, Mr. Scott Rikkers, Dr. Chuck Dotas, and Dr. Stephen Bolstad.
Ms. Bridges is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, a music honor society, the Virginia Band and Orchestra Director’s Association (VBODA), the National Association for Music Educators (NafME), and the recipient of the 2012 William G. Posey Award for Band Service. Before working for ACPS, Ms. Bridges served as Band Director and General Music teacher for Lancaster Middle School, in Lancaster, VA. During her tenure at LMS, she taught sixth through eighth grade band students, fourth and fifth grade general music students, served as musical director for the LMS Drama Club, and Color Guard instructor for the LHS Marching Red Devils.
