Penny Hairston, Principal

Penny Hairston rejoins Douglas MacArthur as Principal after serving five years as assistant principal at James K. Polk Elementary School. Previously, she served four years as an administrative intern at MacArthur from 2011 to 2015 and has over two decades of teaching and administrative experience.


Ms. Hairston began her career in education in 1996, serving as a fourth and fifth grade teacher who helped to open Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School in 2000. She was selected as an administrative intern with Alexandria City Public Schools in 2011 for James K. Polk and Douglas MacArthur. Ms. Hairston served in the administrative intern role at James K. Polk and Douglas MacArthur Elementary Schools until her appointment in 2015 as assistant principal at Polk, where she worked until being hired as Principal for Douglas MacArthur in 2020.  Ms. Hairston enjoys working with the wonderfully diverse student population in Alexandria City Public Schools. 


Ms. Hairston holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and education and received her Masters in Educational Leadership in 2007 from the University of Mary Washington. Ms. Hairston, her husband and family live in Fredericksburg where she is actively involved in several community service organizations.

Rebecca Pittman, Assistant Principal

Rebecca Pittman joined Douglas MacArthur as assistant principal in 2019. She has proudly served Alexandria City Public Schools for eight years, spanning three elementary schools and a number of progressive leadership roles. Mrs. Pittman taught fourth grade at Mount Vernon Community School during its transition to become ACPS’ first fully dual language school. Later, she served as data intervention coach and school testing coordinator at Matthew Maury Elementary School, leading the school’s implementation of professional learning communities and Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS). 

 

Prior to joining ACPS, Mrs. Pittman taught third grade in Baltimore City Public Schools for four years. She earned her Bachelor of Science at Virginia Tech and her Masters in Educational Administration from Grand Canyon University. Mrs. Pittman resides in Fairfax with her husband and their five-year old son and one-year old daughter.

Steven Geter, Assistant Principal

Steven Geter joined Douglas MacArthur as assistant principal in 2019. He is a National Board Certified Teacher with over thirteen years of service in Alexandria City Public Schools. At T.C. Williams High School, Mr. Geter taught all levels of U.S. History and World History, as well as math and special education. Throughout his career, Mr. Geter has fostered active and positive parent engagement in education. He holds a certification in Restorative Practices. 

 

Mr. Geter earned two Master of Arts degrees in Education and Educational Leadership at George Mason University. He earned his undergraduate degree at James Madison University. He is a proud ACPS alumni, having attended Matthew Maury Elementary School, Lyles-Crouch Traditional School, George Washington Middle School, and T.C. Williams High School. Mr. Geter resides in Temple Hills, Maryland.
