Penny Hairston, Principal

Penny Hairston rejoins MacArthur after serving five years as assistant principal at James K. Polk. Previously, she served four years as an administrative intern at MacArthur from 2011 to 2015 and has over two decades of teaching and administrative experience.

Ms. Hairston began her career in education in 1996, serving as a fourth and fifth grade teacher who helped to open Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School in 2000. She was selected as an administrative intern with Alexandria City Public Schools in 2011 for James K. Polk and Douglas MacArthur. Ms. Hairston served in the administrative intern role at James K. Polk and Douglas MacArthur Elementary Schools until her appointment in 2015 as assistant principal at Polk,where she worked until being hired as Principal for Douglas MacArthur in 2020.

Ms. Hairston holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and education and received her Masters in Educational Leadership in 2007 from the University of Mary Washington.

Rebecca Pittman, Assistant Principal

Rebecca Pittman is a proven instructional leader with ten years of progressive leadership experience in diverse educational settings. She currently serves as a data intervention coach and testing coordinator at Matthew Maury Elementary School. She has worked in Alexandria schools since 2013, including teaching fourth grade at Mount Vernon Community School, and she previously worked in Baltimore. Pittman’s leadership style is collaborative and supportive and she uses data to evaluate and lead in a way that improves teaching and learning. She holds a Masters in Education and Administration from Grand Canyon University. Her Bachelor of Science is from Virginia Tech. Pittman is also a leader in implementing Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports (MTSS) to help struggling students.

Steven Geter, Assistant Principal


Steven Geter is a results-driven educational professional with more than 12 years of classroom experience. He has been working in ACPS since 2008 and has completed an assistant principal internship with a focus on parent and community partnerships. He is a National Board Certified Teacher, having taught all levels of U.S. History and World History as well as math and special education. He holds two Master of Arts degrees from George Mason University, the most recent in Educational Leadership and before that in Education. Geter also holds a certification in Restorative Practices and has led professional development courses for teachers on using technology, incorporating AP into curriculum, as well as building reading strategies across the curriculum.
