Mr. Victor L. Powell, Principal
Victor Powell is in his first year as the principal of Matthew Maury Elementary School. Prior to joining Maury, he served as assistant principal of Samuel W. Tucker Elementary, where he collaborated with the staff to successfully increase the student achievement for targeted gap groups within the Mathematics and Reading Standards of Learning.
Before joining ACPS in 2015, he was an assistant principal at Park View High School in Loudoun County for three years where he supported instructional audits and interactive achievement to get the school out of warning status for English Learners and Specialized Instruction. He has also been a dean at the high school level.
Powell originally trained as a math teacher. One of the highlights of his career was increasing the sixth-grade math scores at Warrenton Middle School in Fauquier County from 35 percent to 95 percent over the course of a single year.
He has also served as an adjunct instructor at Ball State University within their Teachers College as an instructor for Multicultural Education for education majors. He has served on curriculum teams for ELL, superintendent committees for districts strategic plans and represented assistant principals on various committees for targeting instructional interventions.
His passion is to inspire, connect and educate the communities in which he serves and to building quality and meaningful relationships with all stakeholders to meet the needs of all students.

Mrs. Suzanne Hess, Assistant Principal
Suzanne Hess has worked in Alexandria City Public Schools since 2001. She began her career on the west side of the city at John Adams Elementary, where she taught multiple grade levels, held many roles and ended her time there as an English Language Learners Specialist and Department Chair.
In 2015, she was appointed assistant principal at Maury where she serves as the LEA for all special education process meetings, as well as the school's testing coordinator. She welcomes any questions families may have about either of these two processes and is happy to sit down and discuss these with parents throughout the school year.
A native of Miami, Mrs. Hess earned a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education with a Concentration in English Speakers of Other Languages from the University of Miami in 2001. She earned a master's degree in Administration and Supervision from George Mason University in 2010.
Mrs. Hess appreciates the amazing students at Maury and enjoys working each day to provide them with a welcoming environment, filled with rich learning experiences. She is committed to the academic, social and emotional growth of every child. Mrs. Hess loves being a part of the Matthew Maury family. She believes the staff, students and community are the best around!
