The GED is a high school equivalency diploma. A GED is awarded to adult students who score a passing mark on the GED test, a series of exams that cover four different topics: math, language arts, science and social studies.

What's the GED® test like?

The GED® test has been updated to make sure it measures what graduating high school seniors know and what colleges and employers will expect of you.

  • Four (4) parts:
    • Science (95 minutes)
    • Social Studies (75 minutes)
    • Reasoning Through Language Arts (155 minutes including a 10-minute break)
    • Mathematical Reasoning (120 minutes)
    • Offered on a computer (paper available for accommodations only)
  • English and Spanish

How do I register?

Sign up for MyGED™ at www.GED.com for information about local policies, how to request modified testing conditions (accommodations), and to schedule your exam.

When can I schedule?

Scheduling is available 24 hours a day 7 days a week with MyGED™ at www.GED.com. Log in and click on "Schedule Test" on the top. Once you complete the scheduling questions you'll be directed to choose your language, subject, and the day and time that works best for you to test. You can also schedule one test at a time to make sure you feel prepared every time. You can take the test at any testing center listed.

What is the passing score?

On the GED® test, you need to earn at least 145 points on each subject to pass in addition to scoring a total battery of at least 600. To find out if you're likely to pass, take GED Ready™: The Official Practice Test and the only test that can tell you if you're likely to pass. Sign into MyGED™ at www.GED.com to get ready with GED Ready™.

Is there a fee to take the test?

You can pay as you go with the GED® test. This means you can pay for each subject individually or when you are ready to test. In Virginia, the fee per subject is $36. The total test fee is $144.

Payment options have been updated to include debit/credit cards, money orders, and personal checks. No cash will be accepted.

The ACPS Adult Learning Center (ALC) announces the opening of a Pearson VUE® Testing Center at ACPS Central Office, 1340 Braddock Place, 7th Floor, Alexandria, VA 22314 (directions and parking information).

Please register at least one day in advance by visiting www.GED.com. Testing will be broken up into two exams per day, with subsequent testing to occur the following day until complete (unless arranged otherwise). Same-day registration will not be permitted. Fees are $6 per subject (ex. all subjects = $24 total).

Dates for the Official GED Test at our GED Testing Center (1340 Braddock Place, 7th floor) are scheduled as follows on Mondays and Thursdays:

  • November 13 & 16, 2023

Times for all dates are 2:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Very important: you must bring an up-to-date official government photo ID  in order to take your GED exam—one of the following:

  • State ID
  • Drivers license
  • Passport
  • Green card, or
  • Work permit

All exams will begin promptly at 2:30 p.m. Please arrive no later than 2:15 p.m. for check-in. All scheduling takes place online at www.ged.com. Same-day registration is not permitted.

Transcripts and Certificates  

Our office does not provide your GED certificate or transcript, please contact  www.GED.com  you might be required to pay a fee to secure your documents
