The school system recognizes the value of diverse learning opportunities for students and acknowledges that many families may choose to participate in external programs outside of what is offered in our schools. Please note that these external programs are not sponsored, endorsed, or funded by the school system. Families are encouraged to carefully evaluate these programs to ensure they meet their individual needs and standards.
Summer Residential Governor’s Schools provide high school juniors and seniors with intensive educational experiences in visual and performing arts; humanities; medicine and health sciences; mathematics, science, and technology; or through mentorships in marine science, or engineering.
Each Summer Residential Governor’s School focuses on one special area of interest. Students live on a college or university campus for up to four weeks each summer. During this time, students are involved in classroom and laboratory work, field studies, research, individual and group projects and performances, and seminars with noted scholars, visiting artists, and other professionals. In the three mentorships, students are selected to work side-by-side with research scientists, physicians, and a variety of other professionals. A director and a student-life staff provide supervision of students 24 hours a day, throughout the program.
Since 1988, William & Mary’s Center for Gifted Education (CFGE) has supported high-ability students through engaging, inquiry-based learning that fosters curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning. Through its Saturday Enrichment Programs (SEP), students in grades K–12 explore advanced topics in science, mathematics, humanities, and the arts. Led by passionate instructors, these courses challenge students to think critically, collaborate, and pursue self-directed discovery beyond the traditional classroom. Designed specifically for gifted and talented learners, CFGE programs encourage students to ask big questions, build confidence, and approach learning creatively. The Center is excited to expand these offerings with new Enrichment Programs that provide even more opportunities for exploration, skill-building, and connection with peers.
We are thrilled to introduce our pilot model for the Saturday Enrichment Program (SEP)! This new format gives students the opportunity to dive into exciting, hands-on learning experiences over two consecutive Saturdays.
Each session is designed to spark curiosity, encourage creativity, and deepen understanding through engaging, interactive activities led by passionate instructors. Students will explore new ideas, collaborate with peers who share their enthusiasm for learning, and discover how fun and inspiring education can be outside the traditional classroom setting.
This pilot model allows us to create a focused, energetic learning environment that maximizes both time and engagement—two Saturdays filled with curiosity, innovation, and discovery!
Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) brings students together for a focused, three-day experience built around curiosity, creativity, and active participation.
Each day, students will jump into hands-on activities, explore new ideas, and work alongside peers who are just as eager to learn and create. Our instructors guide the experience in a way that feels natural and engaging, giving students the space to ask questions, experiment, and think in new ways.
The three-day format keeps the energy high while allowing enough time to dig deeper into topics, build connections, and see ideas come to life. It is a chance for students to step outside the usual routine and spend a few summer days learning in a way that feels fresh, interactive, and genuinely enjoyable.
This summer, the Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) goes online, offering a week-long, synchronized learning experience that brings students together in real time, wherever they are.
Across five days, students will log in at scheduled times to participate in live, interactive sessions designed to keep them engaged and involved. Each class is built around discussion, hands-on activities, and opportunities to think, create, and share alongside peers.
Instructors guide the experience with an emphasis on connection and participation, making space for questions, collaboration, and idea-building throughout the week.
The synchronized format creates a shared rhythm and sense of community, while still offering the convenience of learning from home.
Program Eligibility
Students must be in grades K–12 during the current school year and meet at least one of the following criteria:
Demonstrated high interest or achievement in academic subjects, or
Received a distinguished rating on the state assessment, or
Identified as gifted, or
Achieved a score at or above the 90th percentile on recent achievement tests, or
Provide a recommendation letter from a teacher or academic professional.

SMI is a pre-professional summer training program for dedicated high school and college student instrumentalists interested in pursuing a career as 21st century professional musicians. This program provides performance opportunities, high-caliber technical training, practical tools, and rich experiences aimed at empowering students to engage the world as Citizen Artists.

The tuition-free program is designed to expose and prepare students for a 21st century career in music through individualized training and rich experiences to empower students as leaders and thinkers in their chosen fields, while reducing barriers to access.

Our Charlottesville camps strike the perfect balance between STEM skill development and summer fun, allowing kids and teens to experience a week at a top five public university.
