School Boundary Redistricting FAQs
Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) is currently engaged in a community-driven redistricting process to address school capacity across the school division. As the City of Alexandria continues to grow and evolve, redistricting will help balance enrollment across schools, address school capacity, and better align school boundaries with long-term planning needs. This process is guided by a set of principles that prioritize equity, minimizing disruptions for students, maintaining neighborhood schools, and supporting safe and efficient transportation.
Below, you will find answers to frequently asked questions to help you better understand the purpose, timeline, and impact of the redistricting process. We encourage you to stay informed and participate in shaping the future of our schools.

- 1. Why not rank the guiding principles? Would make explaining your decisions more straightforward to explain.
- 2. How are teachers and principals being engaged in this process?
- 3. Suggest displaying physical maps and giving them sticky dots so people can express their preferences between potential maps.
- 4. No matter what, some families will be upset. How do we account for that?
- 5. Aside from mobility, does historical data capture study areas/neighborhoods that historically enrolled more heavily in private schools?
- 6. How many iterations of potential maps will the RAC provide feedback on?
- 7. Can we not focus only on RAC representatives but perhaps engage schools directly through PTAs?
- 8. Comment on the RAC schedule. Our last meeting is before the second Community Meeting. Where does our role leave off?
- 9. What is the feedback loop to the City Council regarding the approval process for new housing projects that exceed ACPS's ability to support?
- 10. In the orientation, I asked whether someone from the City Council was a Committee member or part of the steering committee. Wouldn't having the City participate in hearing/speaking to the city population be helpful?

- 19. The MVCS dual language program is built on a 50/50 split between native English and native Spanish. How is that considered?
- 20. What role do the current boundaries play in the analysis? Is there an effort to adjust them, or is this a wholesale revision?
- 21. How are after-school recreation, Campagna centers, and after-school clubs/enrichments, especially with elementary school?
- 22. Where does ECE fit into John Adams's campus utilization? How is equality measured? How are students with two home addresses distracted?
- 23. Can we examine students' penetration rates by rental rates or housing values rather than unit size or structure type?
- 24. How does birth rate data work when the people in Alexandria are from somewhere else?
- 25. Is there a document that lists all the developments/housing in process?
- 26. What is the new capacity of GEORGE MASON's new build? Why do you even look at capacity utilization that isn’t in the goal range? What is an inter-district transfer?
- 27. How do you account for the impact of Major Federal Policy changes on ACPS enrollment projections over the next 5 years, i.e., anti-immigrant policies resulting in deportations, Feds, etc.?
- 28. Can PK-5 seats in the PK-8 Programs be used for 6 through 8 students?
- 29. Will we be provided with transportation maps that indicate current bus routes? Is there any date that shows specific buses running into routine bussing issues?
- 30. We are given a 90-100% capacity utilization guide. Is there a guide for demographic alignment, as that is one of the guiding principles?
- 31. How are transfers approved? Can we see the data about the program–related transfers by native (home) language- specifically for the Dual Language School? (both in or out)

- 39. As we look at Middle School Boundaries, will multiple Middle schools continue to be Locations for Dual-Language Students?
