School Boundary Redistricting Policies
As part of the ongoing School Boundary Redistricting Process, the Alexandria City School Board is reviewing several key policies that guide and impact how school boundaries are developed and adjusted.
These policies help ensure the redistricting process is transparent and aligned with the school division’s mission to support all students. The review includes evaluating current policies for clarity, effectiveness, and alignment with the guiding principles approved by the School Board.
The School Board will hold multiple work sessions to discuss the proposed policy revisions. These discussions are essential to providing the policy framework that will support the implementation of any new school boundaries. View the recordings and materials from these work sessions below.
The School Board will continue reviewing and refining these policies throughout the redistricting process. Community input will remain a critical part of both policy and boundary discussions.
We encourage families and community members to stay engaged and informed as this work continues.
The final School Board vote on the proposed school boundary changes is scheduled for June 12, 2025. The new boundaries will go into effect at the start of the 2026–27 school year.

Clusters were developed for the following reasons:
- To help reduce/eliminate cross-city capacity reassignments
- This past practice significantly increased the amount time capacity-transferred students spent on the bus, impacting their overall transportation and day-to-day educational experiences
- To be more efficient with transportation routing
- Efficient routing reduces carbon emissions/footprint, saves on fuel costs and complements current transportation staffing
- This is in alignment with the glossary definition of “Clusters/Capacity Reassignment Cluster noted within School Board RegulationJC-R/JCD-R
