Student Representatives
The opinions and concerns of the students in Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) are important to the Alexandria City School Board. Including Student Representatives as advisors to the Board creates a direct link between ACPS students and the elected body that governs them. These positions provide students the opportunity to serve their community and to gain a more thorough understanding of city and school governance and its role in creating an effective learning environment for every child in Alexandria.

All applications are reviewed by a Student Representative Selection Committee (SRSC), which will select five most qualified at-large applicants and two most qualified International Academy applications. These finalists are submitted to the Superintendent for review before forwarding to the School Board. The Board Chair and Vice Chair (or designees) will conduct in-person interviews and recommend the best qualified applicants for full Board approval.
Student Representatives attend all regular open board meetings and may choose to attend work sessions and/or special called meetings. They do not attend closed meetings. With the exception of prior approved absences, Student Representatives are required to attend at least 75% of regular School Board Meetings either in person or virtually.
As is feasible, Student Representatives sit at the dais during Board Meetings and they present a report on behalf of all of the students in the Division. Although they may participate fully in agenda item discussions, Student Representatives do not vote on any issue. As representatives of the student body, they are given the opportunity to voice their opinions and those of the student body they represent on any and all issues brought before the Board, except as precluded by law or policy. Additionally, Student Representatives may at times be offered the opportunity to participate in events and discussions as representatives of the Division.
