November 12, 2018 - Bridge Repair and Safe Routes to School Update

November 12, 2018

Dear Charles Barrett Elementary School Parents and Guardians,

On Friday afternoon, Arlington County sent out an urgent notice closing the bridge at West Glebe Road and South Four Mile Run to trucks and buses over 5 tons. A recent check on bridge revealed safety concerns and accelerated deterioration in the structural beams.

Although we understand the need for this urgent decision, we are also anticipating that this could have an impact on Charles Barrett, as trucks and buses over 5 tons traveling to 395 from West Glebe Road are now expected to be diverted past the school. The restrictions will stay in place until further notice, and could last up to two years.

Over the weekend, ACPS Staff reached out to the City’s Transportation and Environmental Services Department and the Alexandria Police Department for assistance in responding to this issue. The police and ACPS safety and security staff will be monitoring the potential impact to students and their families over the next few days and will be making recommendations as to how to address the obvious concerns, including assessing the location and staffing of crossing guards. Given the length of time needed to resolve the issues regarding the safety of the bridge, we will be looking for a long-term solution to ensure the safety of our students, families and staff as they travel to and from school each day.

Please be assured that the safety of our students and community is always a top priority in ACPS. Thank you for your patience. I will keep you updated regularly as we work to find ways to mitigate the impact from this project.
