Summer School and Summer Enrichment Programs

  • We encourage participation in our summer school programs to reduce the summer learning loss, support students who are new to ACPS, and provide help for those who may need additional academic support. 

  • KINDERGARTEN PREPARATORY PROGRAM (K-PREP)

    This program is for all incoming kindergarten students. Register at the school where your child will be attending kindergarten. Learn more about Kindergarten Prep.

    Dates: August 18 - 21, 2020*
    Times: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
    Locations: Each elementary school except Samuel W. Tucker.*

    *Mount Vernon Community School will have their K-Prep program during the first week of Summer Language Academy, starting July 6, 2020 through July 24, 2020.

    MIDDLE SCHOOL PREP

    This program is for all rising sixth-grade students. Breakfast and lunch are served for all students.

    T.C. WILLIAMS HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER SCHOOL

    These courses are for those students taking a new course in Economics and Personal Finance, Health and PE (9th and 10th grade), or credit recovery or repeat courses. For more information see T.C. Williams Summer School At-A-Glance (PDF)

    AVID EXCEL SUMMER BRIDGE *BY INVITATION ONLY 

    Long-term English Learner students who apply and are accepted into the FCH’s and GW’s AVID Excel elective will be invited to take part in the week-long (5 days) AVID Excel Summer Bridge. Rising 6th and 7th grade Summer Bridge focuses on community building and AVID Excel recursive routines that support language acquisition and college readiness.

    Students will explore AVID Excel recursive routines that will increase their confidence, academic language, and literacy development and participate in team-building activities to establish a positive peer group. To culminate the learning, Excel students will take part in college and cultural field trip during this week-long learning. Breakfast and lunch are served for all students.

    Dates: July 20-24, 2020, Week 3 of ACPS Summer School, 9:00 am – 1:00 pm

    Location: TC. Williams Minnie Howard Campus

    Who may attend: Excel Summer Bridge is for those rising 6th and 7th grade long-term English learners who applied and were accepted into AVID Excel for the SY20-21 at F.C. Hammond MS and G. Washington MS for the fall. Students will be informed of their acceptance by April 17,2020.

    Registration: Forms will be mailed home to AVID Excel students with their acceptance letters in order to complete the registration process.

    ONLINE SUMMER SCHOOL

    Online classes are for rising 10th, 11th and 12th grade students. Rising 9th grade students need administrative approval. Preference is given to rising 12th grade students.

    Date: These classes may begin as early as June 1, 2020. They are completed by students at their own pace. Course(s) must be completed by July 29, 2020. Students need to complete all paperwork and have attended the mandatory orientation session before they start these classes.

    PLEASE NOTE: Any student who is a NCAA students must begin their course by June 15, 2020 in order to adhere to NCAA stipulations regarding 6 weeks of class time.

    Location: Online in the student's own home, public library or other facility with internet access. If you do not have access to the internet at home, please check with Technology Services for alternative options.

    Who may attend: Rising 10th, 11th and 12th graders. Rising 9th grade students need administrative approval. Preference is given to rising 12th grade students.

    Registration: Rising 10th, 11th, and 12th graders who are interested in online summer school may register with their school counselors beginning in mid-May, and ending on July 6. Please note that there are only a set amount of slots available, so register early.

    EXTENDED SCHOOL YEAR (ESY)

    This is for any student identified for this program through their IEP.

    Location: James K. Polk Elementary School
    Pre-K: 9-11 a.m.
    K-5: 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

    Secondary ESY:
    T.C. Williams High School, King Street Campus
    Grades 6 through post-graduate: 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
    Social Skills Class (Tues, Weds, Thurs): 9 a.m.-11 a.m.

    ENGLISH LEARNER SUMMER LEARNING PROGRAM

    This program is for any student identified for English Learner services at levels 1, 2 and 3 in grades K through 8.

    Elementary School EL Summer Learning Program:

    Time: 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

    Middle School EL Summer Learning Program:

    Location: Minnie Howard Campus

    Note: Rising sixth grade students attend the fifth-grade program. Rising ninth grade students attend the eighth grade program.

    SUMMER LANGUAGE ACADEMY

    Who can attend:

    • All rising kindergartners through fifth grade students who are registered at Mount Vernon Community School
    • Rising kindergartners through fifth grade dual language students from John Adams Elementary School

    Dates: July 6 - 24, 2020

    Times:
    Rising Kindergarten: 8:00 a.m. - noon
    Rising Grades 1-5: 8:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

    Location: Cora Kelly School for Math, Science and Technology

    Registration Cost:

    Kindergarten

    • Week one is free.
    • Weeks 2-3 cost $100 per child.
    • Free/reduced price lunch eligible families pay $25 per child.

    Grades 1 - 5

    • $250 per child.
    • Free/reduced price lunch eligible families pay $25 per family.

    Charges above apply to first the two children in a family. All children after the second child are free.

    The price includes daily breakfast, lunch and transportation.

    SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

    This program is for students in grades 3-8, by invitation only.

    The ACPS Summer Enrichment Program is a free, exclusive experience that helps students in grades three through eight enhance their skills in reading, writing and mathematics. Students will engage in a range of hands-on learning experiences, including projects and visits to Alexandria and Washington, D.C. landmarks.

    TRANSITION TO ALGEBRA

    This program is for students exiting 7th grade with low course grades and/or below 400 on the 7th grade Math SOL. By invitation only.

    SUMMER THEATRE SCHOOL (CAMP)

    Any student in grades 6-8 is eligible to attend this camp.

    Come join our talented company as we explore Acting on Camera, Improvisation, Clowning, and Stage Combat. Students will learn how to become more spontaneous performers by studying improvisational technique. They will develop comedic skills through audience interaction and workshops on basic stage combat. The program will also feature a unit on acting for the camera and an invited audience final performance.

    TITLE I PRIMARY PREPARATORY PROGRAM (3P)

    Registration for this camp is by invitation only.

    The Title I Primary Preparatory Program is designed to prepare rising 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade students (those who will complete K and 1st in June 2020), who attend Title I schools, for the rigors of the upcoming school year. Engaging learning experiences will be centered on foundational literacy and numeracy skills.
